After creating an awesome lesson plan with two other crazy talented ladies regarding #Herstory and create your own Picket Signs Presentation. I chose to make my art about Ms. Angela Davis. I have always dug her messages. I obtained my BA from the University of California Santa Cruz in 2008-2010. Where at one point Angela Davis was a Lecturer at the college but retired the year I entered the school in 2008.
What is left is a fanciful tale from my father of all people. Angela caused a bit of commotion in 1972 - the year my parents got hitched of all things. This caused some of controversy in the McClain family (My family). Why is this story interesting to the both of us you might ask? My father is from a wealthily conservative white christian farmer family from Bakersfield not the most radical of people. And growing up in San Joaquin Valley in the late 90's-2000's and the only artist... Even more challenging. Furthermore, when my grandparents met my my mother they rejected her immediately, because she got married at 19 and thought she was pregnant. They however were both poor, despite my father coming from his background, they worked hard to obtain the life they always dreamed of after meeting at Fresno State the year prior. They are still happily married 45 years later and waited to have us kiddos 10-12 years later (things were different those days). Anyways, I was totally shocked to hear from my father, that a white farmer had put up the bail for Angela Davis to be freed. The bail came from a deed from his dairy farm land was on in the San Joaquin Valley were I an all my family members originated from for generations! His name was Rodger McAfee and freeing Ms Davis earned him the, "Thrill of A Lifetime.' The saying goes, "If it's hysterical its Historical"... and in this case if it's "Hysterical it' Herstorical.
